About Isabel

Isabel Simoes deCarvalho is a projection, scenic, and production designer based in Washington DC.

From Washington state, Isabel moved to D.C. in 2016 to pursue a Bachelors of Arts in theatre at George Washington University, specializing in Scenic Design. There, she worked in and around the DC area for many small theaters as an Assistant Set Designer, Stage Manager, and Master Electrician. Additionally, Isabel set designed her thesis show for George Washington University in 2020 and won the Tim Evan’s Memorial Award for excellence in Theatrical Design.

After undergrad, Isabel moved to nearby Annapolis, Maryland and worked as the Technical Director of the Classical Theatre of Maryland, broadening her drafting, construction, and leadership skills. Realizing her heart was in design, Isabel chose to pursue a MFA.

Isabel graduated with her MFA from San Diego State University (in Design and Technology for Theatre Television and Film, specializing in Scenic, Projection, and Production Design) in May 2024. During her time at SDSU, Isabel worked with many San Diego theaters. Isabel worked as a props assistant for The Old Globe Theater for about two years, designed sets and projections for shows at San Diego State, and designed sets and props for local and international theaters; such as Bocon Arts and Opera Tijuana.

During the Summer of 2024, Isabel was the Props Supervisor for the Central City Opera Summer Festival in Colorado. After a magnificent mountainous summer, she has made her way back to Washington DC and is excited to dive into opportunities throughout the DC metro area.
